1967 International Harvester Scout 800
Overview
This 1967 International Harvester Scout 800 is a modified project/trail truck featuring a Scout 800 body mounted on a Scout II frame and axles. It is powered by a 304 V8 paired with a Torqueflite 727 automatic transmission and equipped with Scout II power steering and power brakes.
This is an unfinished project rather than a restored Scout, but much of the heavy modification work has already been completed.
Engine & Mechanical Condition
The engine runs. In March 2025, the carburetor was cleaned, and the Scout was started and idled successfully.
When shifted from neutral into gear, however, the engine stalled. The cause was not determined during the time spent working on it.
The Scout could be moved under its own power by starting it in gear. There does not appear to be a neutral safety switch.
Those who worked on the truck felt that the engine sounded strong and did not believe the stalling problem indicated a serious engine issue. However, this has not been confirmed through further diagnosis, and a compression test has not been performed.
Fuel is supplied by a fuel cell bolted into the bed.
Chassis, Suspension & Tires
Scout II frame and axles
Scout II power steering and power brakes
Torqueflite 727 automatic transmission
Substantial aftermarket roll cage tied into the frame
Front and rear solid shock hoops with gas shocks
32-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires (no DOT date codes)
The suspension and cage modifications required removal of the inner fenders in the engine compartment and openings cut into the bed.
Body & Exterior
The body sheet metal is generally in good condition, although a previous owner modified the fenders to accommodate plastic Ford fender flares.
During that modification, the sheet metal was pie-cut and bent upward. The fenders may be repairable for someone willing to undertake the necessary metalwork.
The hood was also cut at some point to accommodate a scoop.
Interior & Electrical
The interior includes aftermarket racing seats mounted to the roll cage and a Tuffy center console.
A waterproof fuse box is mounted to the bulkhead in the cab between the seats.
The wiring is incomplete, and no wiring diagram is available. However, the engine does start using the key in the dashboard. Gauges are not currently installed.
Project Potential
With its Scout II chassis, running 304 V8, automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, frame-mounted roll cage, modified suspension setup, and 32-inch Mud-Terrain tires, this Scout has the makings of a capable trail truck.
It may also be possible to make the vehicle streetable with additional mechanical, electrical, and safety work.
